Before the industrial revolution people lived mainly off the land. And with the starting of factories it gave people the opportunity to improve their lives with employment. But factory conditions were often unacceptable and initially factory work was resisted. Workers encountered harsh conditions and little consideration for their welfare.
And the personnel was considered as a cost to the organization. They didn't consider people as a resource to the organization.
(Designingbuildings.co.uk, 2019)"Scientific Management , developed by FW Taylor and F Gilbreth changed systems of work. . Production was analyzed in minute detail and workers conditions improved. And the working and the welfare activities for the employees were improved.
In the late 1920's and early 1930's the experiments, famously presented by Elton Mayo, recognized that better production could be achieved by treating the workers as cooperative participants in the process.
In 1960 McGregor recognized that the needs of both the organization and the individual need to be recognized
HR departments have undergone massive changes in the last 20 years. This department traditionally controlled all issues concerned with employees, such as; recruitment, selection, training, appraisals, record keeping and more. Many of these functions are now carried out elsewhere.Counsultants recruit and recommend new staff. Line managers carry out appraisals, disciplinary and grievance procedures and outside agencies provide training and education for staff.
Rather than being hated now the HR is becoming an employee friendly department.
